Outdoor Fun: Argo Canoe Livery, Ann Arbor, MI

Another Ann Arbor "must do" is canoeing on the Huron River from the Argo Canoe Livery.  If you have family visiting from out of town, it's one of the pretties outings and one activity that really says, "Michigan."

Insider Info.

Choose adventure. You can ride down the Huron River that has a decent current and a few small rapids and keep your group entertained and on their toes. This path takes you through the heart of Ann Arbor and is a popular and bit more crowded option. There is a van that will pick you up and take you back to your car at no extra charge.

Chose quiet. Another option for canoeing the river is the still water option. This is perfect for beginners or those who a little nervous about the rapids. It was an easy ride for little ones too. It is a picturesque and quiet option where you see the natural beauty of Ann Arbor. There is also a place a few miles up the river where you can park your boats and take a dip. This option takes quite a bit of muscle since the current doesn't push you much.

Decide on your watercraft. There are so many options! You can kayak, canoe, raft, tube, or stand-up paddle board. Pick your favorite.

Explore in all seasons. Some friends of ours like to canoe the river in spring, summer and fall. They claim it is the best way to see the beauties of Ann Arbor in every season. Just be careful...you don't want to turn over when the water is chilly.

Ask a few questions. If you have never canoed or kayaked, take a few minutes to ask some questions. There is nothing worse than being unprepared in the middle of the water.

Plan for crowds. This is a VERY popular activity for both families and college students so on sunny weekends, you will find that plenty of people had the same idea. Don't let this dissuade you! They have plenty of boats and supplies, though you might have to wait a few minutes, it's worth it.

If you go.

Bring your ID. They will need to hold this or your car keys as collateral for the boat.

Leave your valuables at home. Remember that there is a good chance that things will get wet. My iPhone was in a plastic ziploc bag, but water seeped inside after we tipped and it was ruined.

Take along snacks. The still water canoe trip was rather long, so we were happy we had some snacks to munch on when we docked the boats to swim.

Everything is provided. The Livery provides everything you need including oars and life vests. However, if you have a young child, you might want to bring a life jacket that they are comfortable in.

Bring your money. They take cash or cards. Cost depends on which type of float you choose. Plan on between $14 and $20 for 2 hours.

Plan for your numbers. A canoe is designed for 2 adults but can also fit 2 adults and 2 small children. If you have more than that, you will have to split up.
